Whats your stance on 'em?

personally i love 'em. its just my thing i guess. i dont know why. i just like them. but i must say when it comes to tattoos, they have to have meaning. i have two on my back (a fairy on my lower back and a phoenix between my shoulder blades) and am getting a few more...eventually (a Goddess symbol wrapped around my ankle, angel wings over my heart, and possibly a heart with the words faith on my upper buttcheek;) ). i have a helix on my left ear and a tragus on my right. if u dont know what those are, then well, you arent as into b.m. as others. but its cool. to each his own. i want a tounge ring badly, but my fiance doesnt want me to...so idunno...i might do it anyway. depends on the whole job thing...lol. im working on getting some pics of my tats and piercings up on my Campus Hook site...i encourage everyone to check them out when i do...the link is in my blog. so yeah-i wanna know whatchu got?

In general, I can't stand tattoos or piercings of any kind. There have been exceptions meaning that on a few rare occasions I've seen ones that I found mildly attractive, but most of the time they just make me ill. Of course, I must obviously be the exception to the rule since more and more people seem to be getting stuff like that done. At least it makes the screening process that much easier. And at the same, I don't really like jewelry either, which narrows the list down even more. Maybe what I'm saying is that I just like people who are as natural as possible. Again, that's just me.

You know, I really can't stand it when people automatically associate tatoos with piercings. I have a lip ring and I always get the remark, "Got any tatoos?" What is that???? I dont' understand it. Tatoos are mutilation that can't be reversed without some serious dough, and body piercing...well dang near everyone has their ears peirced. Why should a lip be any different? I just think it's nice. I love my lip ring.

Perhaps it has something to do with a lip ring being pretty out in the open. If someone has their, bellybutton, nipple, penis, clit, whatever pierced, it's not something that gets seen everyday. And like you said, everyone has pierced ears, so it's not particularly original. I see more and more girls getting tongues done and more and more noses done, and like I said, I don't like it, but somebody must. But generally, I associate piercings more with girls, tattoos more with guys despite the fact that I'm sure it's probably like 50-50 on both or something or other. And in addition, generally girls get tattoos in places that aren't always visible. Reading over what brokedownprincess says, you identify lower back, between the shoulders, and someday ankle, heart, and butt cheek. Now, I don't know how you dress, but I'd be willing to guess that not everyone would be privy to some of those. All of which, in some fashion leads me to my point: perhaps the reason you get questioned so much Trinitie is that number one, you have a more visible piercing that people notice, and number two, people can't see any visible tattoos and so they have to ask. I'd be willing to fathom a guess and say that if it's a middle-aged person doing the asking, they are so outraged by the idea of a piercing in something other than an ear that they assume you must be some sort of anarchist and if it's a young person, they might possibly be trying to see if they can get you to expose yourself, since that's what many girls do when they have a tattoo and someone wants to see it. Oh well, lots of speculation and no point to any of it means that I'm finished.

I currently have 4 tattoos - flowers on my ankle (my first, a don't -care- what- it -is- just-gotta -have- a -tattoo), an ourobourous on my right upper deltoid (waited years to get that one), a trinity knot on my upper back and a celtic knot with a sunburst on my lower back.
Until recently I had 5 piercings (I'll let your imagination run with that one) but now I'm down to 2, my tongue and my belly button ( had to take the other 3 out for various reasons). I got the tongue done before it became as mainstream as it is now, and the belly button was first done back in '96.
I like my tattoos and piercings. I got all of them (except for the flowers on my ankle) for very personal reasons, they all symbolize something for me and I wanted them to be outward representations of my inner feelings.
I got my first tatt when I was 23, my second when I was 30..and the majority of the piercings I got in my late 20's to early 30's. I'll be 35 this summer... and I'm getting more tattoos then. I just happen to have found an artist I really like (Matt Thrash and Mikey Sembach, Thrash's Living Art, Rapid City, SD) and want to capitalize on that!
They're addictive, I think - tattoos and piercings. I found that once I got once, I wanted more. I'm not planning on becoming that tattooed lady at the circus freak show, but as I said, I am going to get couple more.

very cool-i love lip rings trin! ppl associate the two b/c they are both forms of expression. they assume if you are "wild" enough to have one, then you must have both. and i totally agree with just about everything you said dharmagirl! i got mine for the same reasons....they are outward expressions of my spirit. i too have found a place and ppl i love-WOOT WOOT! for Shane (tattoos) and Wendy (piercings) at Kingpin Studio here in NC! they rock my world! i too plan on getting several more (i cant wait!)...and ppl ask me all the time-"arent you going to regret it when you're 50?" i say no...b/c they mean something. and like ben said-im not advertising them...they are strategically placed. so i dont have to show them if i dont want to! and small question dharma-what is an ourobourous?.... im just wrestling with the decision-to pierce the tongue or not to pierce the tongue?

Pierce it. It doesn't hurt that bad. If you can get an IV placed, you can get a tongue piercing. I love mine.

An Ouroborous is a Gnostic infinity symbol, it's a circular serpent with it's tail in it's mouth. For those of you who watched 'X-Files', Scully has one tattooed on her ass (though I didn't know that until after I got mine) It was also heavily featured in the TV series 'Millenium'.

I too am in no doubt that I will not regret getting mine. They mean something to me, and always will.

you rock dharmagirl! i wasnt hesitating b/c of the pain but b/c of the fact that my fiance hates them and i am trying to get a job at american express.....so i dont know if a tongue ring would be "professional". but thanks for the update and may i reiterate-you rock!!!

My husband didn't like it at first either..but now says that kissing me without it in feels like there's something missing. As for the job, I used to work security and investigations and had times when I had to take mine out (though they were few and far between) - you can get pink retainers for them to make them a little less noticeable. No-one has really made any negative comment about mine...and there was a reason behind my getting pierced there too. I had made the decision to practice Buddhism and decided that getting a tongue stud would be a good way to remind myself to think before I opened my mouth and was negative or derogatory about anyone - the words would have to get past my piercing. It may not make sense to anyone else, but at the time (and even now) it made sense to me. the belly button was just a celebration of having a flat stomach again after Jake was born!

I just have to admit that I'm a chicken. I saw my twin get an eyebrow ring done (I was supposed to get mine done, too.) and that was enough for me. As for tattoos, I always said that if I was ever going to get one, I'd get a little tiny heart. With the words love me tender around it. On my ass. Generally, people don't know if it's a joke, or not.

I think if you wan't to get another tattoo or piercing you have to do it for you. Ultimatly you are the one who has to live with it so let yourself make the decision what is right for you. My husband was anti-tattoos on woman, until I came home with one that had a deep meaning for us. Then he thought is was cool. As far as piercingss go, the tounge is not painful. So go for it, the worst that can happen is you take it out, It closes up in like a week then. Good Luck!
